Pro-Active Weekend

Monday, February 5th, 2007

Well, went ahead with my plan and acquired 2 40GB HDD’s for 20 quid (inc P+P etc). Intend to RAID 1 them on my O/S rig, and migrate the 200G Seagate that is currently my O/S to my server to add some more oomph.

Dont ask how, but we got our hands on Vista today, Ultimate version, and it is, NICE. I must admit. A few flaws are due to compatability and lack of drivers, meaning i wont be upgrading right away. But believe me, disregarding security issues (be clever and hide behind NAT and a hardware firewall for gods sake), it is one hellllllll of a nice OS. Looks good, feels good, great options. Im impressed.

Yawn..

Well, didnt do much today. Got up at 4pm, watched the rugby, played with SAMBA while setting up access to my NAS for the house.

I then went to Asda with Martin, came back and chilled with Connor and Joe in Connors room. Came back into my room and realised i have only 9GB left on my NAS (out of 300GB), but have a 200GB hdd tied up on my main rig as the O/S HDD. So i bought a 40GB HDD, with the intention to sticking THAT into my main rig, and using the 200GB in my server. Fun fun fun.

Also, found a cool new network monitoring tool called Network Probe, very nice GUI for anyone who wants to try it.

Well…

Not done much today (Friday), finished moving in last night so took my key back to reception (we switched blinds from my old room to my new room last night, and didnt put it back up in my old one, hehe, 0′ty). We spent most of the day tidying the kitchen with improv stuff like broom handles and bent tins heh Finally got it cleaned, an jus sat round drinking and networking! Finally set up our triple-NAS supported house LAN, with Gigabit switches throughout, meaning its nice and fast.

Off to bed now, Ciao.

It looks like Jim Gray has passed away, after going missing at Sea. The man is seen as the Father of the Database and DBMS, Having been instrumental in transaction research, and a strong driving force behind Microsofts research dept. He will be sorely missed. And for those who dont understand my anger at Microsoft (spit), you will now see why :-

When CNN Editor (James Kim IIRC)  passed away after going out for help after his family got stranded in a storm in their family car, there were tributes all over their site, sod the advertising revenue, this was one of their own. Now Jim Gray is arguably the same scale of influence in MS as Kim with CNN, There is NO MENTION of anything on Microsofts site, just Vista. Downright despicable, currently employed or not, this man is an institution and they havent acknowledged him, his death, nothing. Down with Microsoft, Up The Linux!

“BBC Sport can today report the rumour that House 50 Stalwart and Captain Sam Marsh is set to make a shock signing for fellow Lightsider Club House 36, re-uniting him with strike partner Matt Johnson. It is believed that the contracts will be signed later on tonight, and the club will announce the transfer coup Friday Morning.

Marsh, a veteran of 2 seasons at the House, is said to be unhappy with team-mates and following a training ground bust-up, has handed in a transfer request. Both clubs where unable to comment”.
